Source Code Pro is a new font released by Adobe. It does wonders for technical fixed width and source code text readability. I highly recommend to use this font with your text editor, terminal and other software development tools (Especially if your eyes are getting old like mine).
UPDATE 2: I am not sure how subpixel antialiasing affects the screenshot quality. The images definitely have some LCD subpixel antialiasing if you zoom in. All screenshots were taken on Macbook Pro, OSX Mountain Lion, 1920 x 1080 external monitor (no retina).

30 thoughts on “ Go Pro and your eyes will thank you ”I tried many monospaced fonts for years and when Ubuntu Mono was created I haven’t looked back. It looks superb antialiased and the O vs 0 problem is also resolved. I use it under Ubuntu Linux so maybe it’s tweaked to it’s font settings (also there are some custom Ubuntu patches to font rendering engine).
I just tried Source Code Pro and it’s good but not perfect to my taste: too much spacing between lines, too thin. Smaller sizes look much clearer as Ubuntu Mono. Yet I see in your screenshots it’s not so thin so rendering engine and settings play huge role.
Please note that Source Code Pro comes with varying lightness degrees (I think there was 5 of them).
Also the spacing between lines setting can be adjusted at least in iTerm 2 and I have modified it to my preference.
I don’t like it, personally I use Menlo Regular (9) in both Sublime Text and Terminal, it works great.

These days, monospaced typefaces are synonymous with code, but it wasn’t always so. Western monospaced typefaces were initially designed to be used on typewriters where the technical limitations dictated that each character needed to be the same physical width to align correctly. Consequently, no additional work was required to space the letters, creating a writing environment that was simple and effective.
Early computers with limited graphics capabilities relied on monospaced type because it took much less power to render them on screen—making them the de facto choice when working with computer code. These limitations have long since passed, however monospaced typefaces have stuck around. This is due in large part to their legibility. They prevent distractions, speed up a developer’s work, and make it easier to spot mistakes. After all, key the wrong character and things break.
When displaying code snippets on your website, things are slightly different, as people won’t be looking at it for as long. On the flipside, we share code to educate and inform, and it’s detail-oriented information. So when choosing monospaced fonts, it’s still good to make sure they’re as clear as possible.
Punctuation such as commas, colons, semi-colons, and brackets need to be more prominent so they can’t be mistaken for one another. Other key characters to look out for are the capital ‘O’ and zero, which when designed to fit in at the same width would look nearly exactly the same. Most typefaces designed for coding typically either use a slashed or a dotted zero. And just like any good UI typeface, the ‘1’, capital ‘i’, lowercase “L’ and ‘|’ (known as the pipe mark or vertical bar) should be easily distinguishable.

Source Code was designed by Paul D. Hunt as a companion to Source Sans. This complementary family was adapted from the Source design due to a request to create a monospaced version for coding applications. Source Code preserves the design features and vertical proportions of Source Sans, but alters the glyph widths so that they are uniform across all glyphs and weights.
Although this family was designed specifically for coding environments, for which a regular weight will typically suffice, Source Code has been made available in the same weight range as the corresponding Source Sans design. Source Code Pro currently supports a wide range of languages using the Latin script, and includes all the characters in the Adobe Latin 4 glyph set.
As an open source project, it is expected that incremental updates will be made over time to extend glyph set coverage and functionality. Future releases are expected to add support for Greek and Cyrillic scripts, italics, and other features documented on the project page at Open@Adobe. which is hosted by SourceForge.

To build the binary font files from source, you need to have installed the Adobe Font Development Kit for OpenType (AFDKO). The AFDKO tools are widely used for font development today, and are part of most font editor applications.
Building one fontThe key to building OTF or TTF fonts is makeotf. which is part of the AFDKO toolset. Information and usage instructions can be found by executing makeotf -h .
