The easiest way to play back MP4/H.264 files is to use the VLC (VideoLAN) player. You can find VLC downloads for various operating systems on this page. The problem with using VLC is that is isn’t the most efficient, and it does not work with certain MP4/H.264 files – for a more fool proof method, please read on.
The method described here uses a codec pack called K-Lite Codecs Pack to install all the required software for MP4/H.264 playback, as well as playback of virtually every other video format. Some people do not prefer to use codec packs because, while simple to install, they can interfere with your existing setup and causing other problems. What is H.264:
H.264, also known as MPEG-4 AVC (Advanced Video Coding) or MPEG-4 Part 10, is a video compression standard that is set to replace MPEG-2, which offers significantly greater compression than its predecessors. It means compared with MPEG-2, you can get the same quality video at only a third or half the bit-rate with the codec H.264. Namely video encoding with H.264 are only a third or half the size of video encoding with MPEG-2.

Видео должно быть сжато в H.264 – это стандарт, который также известен как MPEG-4 part 10 и AVC (Advanced Video Coding).
