To play Hangman you need something to write on. This could be a whiteboard, a notepad or just the back of an envelope -- as long as all the players can see it clearly, it will work. Hangman requires a minimum of two players; one player chooses a word and draws, while the other players will try to guess the word. Players can use any method to choose who will draw first.
Choosing a WordThe player chosen to draw first decides on a word; she then draws a number of blanks equal to the number of letters in the word at the bottom of the play area. For example, if this player chose the word "suitcase," she would draw eight blanks. The other player then tries to guess a letter that appears in the word. If there are multiple other players, they may take turns guessing or simply allow the first person who has an idea to speak.
Tightening the NooseIf the players guess a letter correctly, the drawing player fills in each blank where the letter occurs. For instance, if the players in the example guessed "S," the blanks would now read "S S ." However, if they guess incorrectly, the drawing player draws part of a stick figure image of a man being hanged. This picture usually consists of 11 parts; these are the arms, body, head and legs, as well as the rope, upright, crossbar and angle of the gallows. The drawing player also writes down any letters that don't appear in the word as a reminder for future turns.
Winning and LosingThe guessing players win if they manage to guess all the letters in the word before the drawing player completes the diagram. They can do this either by guessing all the letters individually, or by guessing the word once they have enough letters to suggest it. For example, once "SU C _ S E" is filled in, the players may feel confident enough to guess that the word is "suitcase." However, if they guess the word incorrectly, the drawing player adds another line to the drawing.
Rules VariationsAs a traditional game, Hangman doesn't have a fixed set of rules. Variations are common. Some versions start with the gallows already drawn, for example, and only draw the rope and body, while others lengthen the drawing by giving the hanged man facial features. Others may not penalize guessing the word wrong.
Hangman is a classic paper and pencil game. The idea of the gallows may be a little morbid, but it also adds to the excitement of the game, especially for boys. Everyone wants to save the poor person from a grim fate!
NUMBER OF PLAYERS . 2 (or more). 1 must be the executioner, and 1 or more letter guessers.
WHAT'S NEEDED TO PLAY . A pencil and some paper are needed to play the game. A clipboard is also a handy hard surface to play on.
SETUP . Either print out some pre-prepared hangman pages or draw a simple gallows and write out the alphabet above or below the gallows. To save time you can print out one of these hangman pages:HOW TO PLAY . Choose one person to be the executioner. That person will think of a word or short phrase an mark out blanks (short lines) for each letter of each word. Separate words with either a slash, a fairly wide gap, or place words on separate lines. Then another player will guess a letter. If that letter is in the word(s) then write the letter in everywhere it would appear, an cross out that letter in the alphabet. If the letter isn't in the word then add a body part to the gallows (head, body, left arm, right arm, left leg, right leg). The player will continue guessing letters until they can either solve the word (or phrase) or all six body parts are on the gallows.
TO WIN . The executioner wins if the full body is hanging from the gallows. The guesser(s) wins if they guess the word before the person is hung.
HANGMAN EXAMPLE .
Here is an example of a hangman game in progress. The phrase is Happy Birthday, so 5 blank spaces were marked out for Happy, and below that 8 blank space were marked out for birthday. Three correct guesses were made: A, R and T. Three incorrect guesses were made: S, E, and M. Three body parts were added for the 3 incorrect guesses.

The rules of hangman are quite simple. There's a secret word that you must guess by choosing one letter at a time. If you chose a letter that appears one or more times in the secret word, the letters and their positions are revealed. If, however, you guess a letter that is not in the secret word, then a piece of the man being hanged is added to the gallows. If you incorrectly guess six letters, the complete hangman character is drawn, meaning you lose!
Investigating the Hangman User InterfaceAs with any application, it is important to examine what, specifically, how we want the user interface to appear before tackling any coding. Traditionally hangman is played on paper, with the hangman figure drawn in the upperleft-hand corner. Beneath this character can be found underscores representing the letters of the secret word. As the person playing hangman guesses correct letters, the underscores are filled in with the appropriate letters. When incorrect letters are guessed, the hangman figure is updated. The game ends when the person fully spells out the word, or when he has guessed incorrectly six times.
Our user interface for this game will borrow heavily from the interface for the paper version. Specifically, we will have a hangman figure in the upperleft-hand corner. Beneath him will be the secret word, with underscores used for each letter that has yet to be guessed. Finally, a number of hyperlinks will exist labeled A through Z. A user guesses a letter by clicking the appropriate hyperlink.
The hangman figure shown to the right is one of seven different images representing the seven different states of the hangman figure. The first image has drawn just the gallows; the second the head; the third the head and torso; and so on, up until the seventh figure, which has the complete head, torso, arms, and legs. These images were shamelessly taken from the hangman example on ASP101.com, and have been saved locally in the /images directory with filenames hang_x .gif. where the image specifies the hangman figure to be used after x incorrect guesses. For example, the image to the right is the image /images/hang_4.gif. since it represents the figure after four incorrect guesses.

The hangmanImage is an Image Web control that we'll use to display the current hangman image. The currentWord Literal control displays the letters that have been correctly guessed for the secret word (and their positions in the word). For letters in the secret word that have yet to be guessed, an underscore is displayed. Finally, the lblEndGameMessage Label control is used to display a message when the game is over, either because the player has won or lost.
Choosing a Secret WordThe following function demonstrates how to extract a random line from a text file. Specifically, the function opens the text file specified by its input parameter filePath. reads in the contents into the ArrayList words. and then randomly selects and returns a word from words.
