A digital equalizer that takes parts from two vintage equalizers and combines them in a new one

SonEQ has 3 bands, bass, middle, treble and, in plus, a pre-amp section.

SonEQ is an equalizer modeled from two analogic devices: A550 and PulEQP. The pre-amp section have been carefully made to obtain a warmth effect.

Saturation stages do not simulate particularly any device, but they are based on some modes of the vintage devices. The first tube emulation stage, stands out the transients and it gives the sound depth, punchy and width.

Meanwhile, in the second stage, SonEQ smooths the transients. The result is a warmy and subtle distorsion that creates a sensation of amplitude.

· Input/Output:

They control the input and output level. These controls are useful for saturation. As much is the level of input, we can get more saturation.

· Output Clip:

When the output of the plugin exceed 0 dBfs, this led is switched on.

Note: SonEQ does not clip, this is because it works internally at 64 bits; but the led is used for knowing if we do not exceed 0 dBfs.

· HighPass/LowPass:

Very soft and musical filters for assuring sonorous quality. The LowPass filter is high quality, this is because it does not become deformed in the nyquist frecuency. You can use these filters without shyness because they can assure you high quality.

· Low: Boost/Atten:

Bass controls. Both, boost and atten are not perfectly aligned. in this way is possible to get surprising effects, combining both knob.

· Mid Freq:

It controls middles, which extend from 150hz to 4khz. Mid Gain: It controls the gain of middles (-12 to +12). High Q: It controls the bandwidth of middles, when this control is working the wave will narrow.

· Highs:

It controls trebbles.

· Drive:

It Controls saturation (which is linked to the “bass exiter”. If you do not want bass exiter, set the drive control at low values. Control saturation amount with the control “input”

· Woow:

This control is a filter “all-pass” which generate a phase distortion, generating a psychacoustic soundround efect. This is only suitable to be used in fine mixing, and do not use it as tracking. Using this control incorrectly, may cause phase cancelation.

· VU METER:

It controls distortion amount, from -20 to 20 is a soft saturation, which is ideal for buses or soften the mixing. From -10 to -4 is a little more clear, giving more hit to the material. From -3 to +1 for stronger saturations but avoiding to break. Over +1 is your choice.

Input/Output Output Clip High-Pass and Low-Pass Lows: Boost/Atten Mid Gain Freq High Gain/Freq

The HIGH GAIN control knob adjusts the gain of a high frequency shelf filter from approximately -12dB to +12dB. The HIGH FREQ selector control below the GAIN knob adjusts the frequency of the “knee” of the shelf.

Controls saturation and the “bass exciter” feature which adds harmonics to low and mid frequencies without creating harsh high frequency harmonics. You can turn off the bass exciter (DRIVE ON/OFF switch set to off) to operate SonEQ without generating harmonics (“clean” EQ mode) or set the drive control at low values for slight “warmth” to low and mid frequencies.

Note the DRIVE control interacts with the INPUT control in creating more harmonics when both controls are set to high values (both controls set to full clockwise creates the most harmonics). The DRIVE control does not affect the level of the fundamental signal itself so that adjusting DRIVE after INPUT and OUTPUT levels are set will only change the harmonic content of the output signal making it easy to hear the effect without being influenced by a level change.

Displays a visual indication of the distortion amount. Readings from -20 to -10 indicate a soft saturation, which is ideal for buses or softening of an entire mix. From -10 to -4 the effect is more "bold", giving more "edge" to the sound. Readings from -3 to +1 provides stronger saturation with more high harmonic content, but still avoid "breaking up". Use readings over +1 at your own risk!

Sonimus SatSon

Sonimus SatSon .

Sonimus: SonEQ Pro

SonEQ Pro details

SonEQ Pro's low frequency controls consist of two filters that work interactively. One boosts lows while the other attenuates. Since boost and attenuation curves are not perfectly aligned, SonEQ Pro's handling of low frequency equalization generates cancellations and summations which sound quite natural and pleasing to the ear.

Used alone, the low boost control acts as a normal low-shelf. Likewise, when the attenuation control is used exclusively it will act as a low-cut shelf to attenuate low frequencies. Cancellation and summation of low-frequencies occur only when boost and attenuation are used in conjunction with one another.

Bell switch: If you do not need to apply a low shelf, low?s band can be used as a bell filter, ranging from 20Hz to 100Hz.

Frequency, boost, and Q controls all affect the shape of the bell filter. The boost and Q controls work interactively. As Q is increased the shape of the bell is narrowed, and its level of enhancement over the source is increased proportionally.

Low-Mid Band

SonEQ's mid band is recommended to equalize midrange frequencies ranging from 70 Hz to 2000 Hz. It?s a bell filter with a generally soft, very musical sound. Nonetheless, this band can be very aggressive if required, depending on the amount of gain applied.

High Mid-Band

Recommended to equalize mids and high-mids, from 1000 Hz to 6800 Hz. In comparison with the band described above, the high-mid band features a larger bandwidth, making it ideal for this type of frequency equalization. It sounds very musical and natural, due to its large bandwidth and smoothly shaped bell.

The high-mid band can be used for any type of application, for example: to enhance clarity of a singer's voice, lend a guitar more presence, and even to make an entire mix sound more natural.

Activating the "Mid Q " setting will reduce frequency bandwidth, giving high-mid equalization a slightly more aggressive property, suitable to lend more attack kick drums, bass guitars, or any instrument requiring a bit more punch.

SonEQ Pro's high boost is very soft and silky, great for imparting a natural sense of “air” to an individual instrument or entire mix. Although not modeled after any single, specific piece of gear, SonEQ Pro's high band takes inspiration from a variety of equalizers famous for their ability to impart a soft and silky sheen.

CUT (LP+HS, LP, LP-HS, HS): CUT control features four modes which variously combine low-pass and high-shelf.

  • LP+HS. Combines low-pass with positive high-shelf. As low-pass is introduced, a high-shelf is coupled with positive gain, creating a slight resonance which results in the experience of increased mids.
  • LP. A very musical sounding low-pass filter 6 dB / Oct.
  • LP-HS. Couples a low-pass filter 6 dB / Oct with a simultaneously applied negative gain high-shelf.
  • HS. High-shelf with negative gain.

High-pass. While the slope is highly effective for cutting, it's the carefully sculpted attenuation near the slope that makes this filter especially soft and sweet.

Low-pass. The low-pass filter is a smooth 12 dB/oct, which combines two 6 dB/oct filters in cascade. Application of the filter results in soft attenuation of high frequencies, recommended for restoration of a natural sound on material which suffers from overhyped high frequencies.

When “Drive” is set to a value of zero, SonEQ Pro's pre-amp section is designed to impartsubtle warmth without overt coloration of your mix. Round lows, warm mids, soft and natural highs, and enhanced perception of transients result from SonEQ Pro's two stage saturation.

The "Drive" control governs both the overall preamp saturation, and also the saturation amount at the bottom end of the frequency spectrum. At a value of zero, saturation remains normal. Increasing the drive level will cause the drive knob to act as a low exciter, further saturating and enhancing low frequencies.

Free Plugin Tip: Sonimus SonEQ

If you’re after a great, free analogue-style EQ, look no further. Sonimus SonEQ has got your back!

Sonimus SonEQ: Introduction and User Experience

Sonimus SonEQ is modelled after two legendary analogue EQ’s: the API 550 and the Pultec EQP .

I’ve been dabbling it for a while now and I must say I’m quite surprised to see a plugin of this quality offered for free.

The EQ sounds very nice and I just love the saturation stages.

The SonEQ is not an all-around workhorse – it’s made for musical/balancing type of jobs rather than precision work. It does color the sound as well.

And it’s very good at what it does! I must say I am a big fan of these analogue style EQ’s. They force you to listen instead of making visual (and often false) judgements of the sound.

The plugin has two separate saturation stages. These do not simulate any particular device, but are based on vintage devices. According to the designer, the first stage is a tube emulation which brings out transients and contributes depth, punch and width to the sound. The second stage smooths out the transients.

The result is a very nice, warm and subtle distortion which is pretty much unheard of in any free plugins so far in my experience.

  • 3 band Equalizer, Low, Mid, High.
  • 2 Musical Filters, High-Pass Low-Pass.
  • Preamp stage with bass booster.
  • 64-bit floating point precision.
  • Up to 192kHz sample rates supported

Sonimus SonEQ is available for free download for Mac and PC (AU/VST). You must register in order to download.

Free

A.O.M. Invisible Limiter

Modern Limiter -

VST Plugin Analyser здесь

Плагины Antress Modern здесь

Nick Crow TubeDriver
