Adobe AIR 2

Adobe is pleased to announce the immediate availability of Adobe AIR 2.6 for Android smartphones and tablets.  AIR 2.6 for Android adds support for Android 3.0 and the latest Android tablet devices – including the Motorola Xoom – as well as improvements to performance and GPU-based rendering, updated Android gesture support, and improved handling of HTML content within AIR apps.

AIR 2.6 for Android provides the foundation for the new Content Viewer for Android. part of Digital Publishing Suite .  Content Viewer for Android uses AIR 2.6 to enable publishers to author immersive, engaging publications and deploy content across platforms and different devices.  Major publishers using Digital Publishing Suite are on board to create and distribute content using Content Viewer for Android.  Conde Nast, National Geographic and Dennis Publishing are among the first publishers to indicate they will use this new viewer to amplify the reach of their iconic titles.

AIR 2.6 for Android can be downloaded from the Android Marketplace and is available on devices running:

• Android 2.2 (FroYo)
• Android 2.3 (Gingerbread)
• Android 3.0 (Honeycomb)

AIR 2.6 for Android performance improvements include:

• Up to 20% faster scrolling performance
• H.264 video decoding at 30fps
• GPU-based animation and games at up to 50FPS

AIR 2.6 for Android functional improvements include:

• Support for the latest Android system gestures
• Bitmap Capture for StageWebView, which provides tighter visual integration between Flash and HTML content
• Asynchronous Bitmap Decoding, which improves the performance of transitions in image-intensive applications

Applications developed with the Adobe AIR 2.5 SDK are compatible with the Adobe AIR 2.6 runtime.  Adobe is on target to deliver the AIR 2.6 SDK and desktop runtime before the 2nd half of 2011.

Motorola Xoom users who are using the Restore Applications feature of Android to transfer their content and apps – including the AIR and Flash Player runtimes – from a different Android device may experience the following as AIR 2.5 and Flash Player 10.1 are not supported on Android 3.0:

• AIR apps are not able to launch. To resolve this, please go to Android Market, search for Adobe AIR, and select ‘update’ to upgrade to AIR 2.6. You won’t need to update or re-download your existing set of apps unless there is an update to the app itself.
• Content developed for Flash Player will not display in the browser. Flash Player 10.2 with Stage Video and other new performance features will support Android 3.0 and address this. The runtime will be preinstalled on some devices or provided via OTA download for others like the Motorola Xoom within a few weeks of device availability.

Try out an early build of Adobe AIR for Android 2

If you have been following the melodrama that is the Adobe/Android vs. Apple/anything that they want, you may be a non-believer that the Flash or AIR platform will ever make it to Android in a real way. Well, if you want to try out an early build of Adobe AIR and some demo apps you can with a leaked version.

It looks like DroidLife got their hands on the APK that you can download and install. They are making it clear that the build is very early which probably means that it’s somewhat buggy. Also, there is a link to some demo apps for AIR.

Although I haven’t given AIR a try yet on my Incredible I have to say that if Adobe wants to get their point across that they are still in the internet media creation game, they need to pick up the pace. It’s actually sort of unbelievable that there isn’t a final version of AIR by now for Android considering that Android is open source and the barrier to entry for any app is somewhat low.

Anyways, if you want to check it out, head over to DroidLife and download it. Remember this is an early build so nothing is guaranteed to work.

Our teams did a great job: in less than a year from the initial support for Android 2.2 (AIR 2.5 last autumn) they released, today, AIR 2.6 for Android devices running 2.2, 2.3, and Honeycomb (3.0).

Here are some of the new features:

• Automatic soft keyboard support – this feature enables support for the soft keyboard even for applications that weren’t designed from the ground up for mobile (the keyboard raises and lowers automatically)
• Asynchronous bitmap decoding –  you can improve the bitmap loading/displaying by using this feature.
• USB debugging for Android – yeah baby, now I can debug while sitting in a plane:). As the name says, when you have your device connected through the USB cable you are able to deploy and debug the application without requiring a WiFi connection. You’ll find Android USB drivers for Windows in the AIR SDK.

If you have applications compiled for AIR 2.5, you don’t have to worry, they will run on AIR 2.6 without recompilation!

Что же касается мобильных устройств, радоваться могут владельцы аппаратов на платформах Android, BlackBerry, Symbian, WebOS и Windows Mobile: отныне их смартфонам и коммуникаторам гарантирована полноценная поддержка технологии Flash. А вот счастливые обладатели iPhone на этот раз в пролете – по словам Adobe, этот смартфон по-прежнему «остается закрытым устройством, и никакого прогресса в этом направлении не предвидится» .

Еще один не очень приятный момент: в этом году бета-версия приложения будет доступна только для платформ Windows Mobile и WebOS, следующие на очереди - владельцы аппаратов на базе Android и Symbian, а обладателям BlackBerry придется ждать дольше всех, поскольку RIM присоединилась к Adobe Open Screen project совсем недавно. Полную реализацию системы для всех перечисленных платформ Adobe намерена завершить к середине 2010 года.

Flash Player 10.1 будет поддерживать мультисенсорные экраны, а также ввод данных при помощи жестов и акселерометра, но его главной особенностью является поддержка видео высокого разрешения (HD). Кроме того, новое приложение предполагает использовать возможности GPU для ускорения графики и видео, не сильно нагружая при этом батарею и минимально расходуя энергоресурсы.
