Megaball AGA Download (1991 Amiga Game)

Megaball AGA Download (1991 Amiga Game)

I remember my first experience with Breakout game. I was about nine, and it was running on an ancient UNIX server at my Dad's office. It had bog standard ASCII graphics, and no sound, but it hooked me in. There's something about bat, ball and brick gameplay that makes it universal. Nowadays. Breakout clones have come a long way. The latest release of Megaball is now commercial, adding more still to the list of game goodies. It's these goodies which set Megaball apart from its Breakout-clone friends.

The basic gameplay is still just a case of hit the ball and bash out the bricks without letting the ball drop off the bottom of the screen, but Megaball doesn't stop there. There are a plethora of powerups that can drop down after you whack out a brick. Some make the ball slower. Some make you bigger (or smaller). Some let you shoot. Some even make you dead (gotta watch those!). There's heaps more though; in total 14 different good, bad (or terrible) things can happen. But wait folks -there's more! In Megaball the bricks are just as interesting as the power-ups. Sure, there's the usual coloured bricks that don't do anything much, and there are the indestructible gold bricks, and there are even the multi-hit bricks.

I've yet to come across many breakout clones with exploding bricks though. These were introduced into Megaball with version 3. and now the author has taken it one step further, adding different types of exploding bricks - some now make more bricks when they blow up. Version 4 has spawned some other new bricks as well as the exploding breeders. Key-and-lock type bricks hit one brick to open up a section of the level), and even amoeba bricks, which slowly fill the level if you let them.

The gameplay itself is also excellent, both with ECS and AGA (which is simply prettier). The sound is as good as you're likely to be able to get away with in a Breakout, and the music's OK too. This version has 20 tunes included, as well as details of how to make your own. On the subject of rolling your own, the latest version is supplied with a level editor, so you can construct your own set(s) of levels in your spare time if you arc so inclined. It's very reminiscent of the old classic Lode Runner. The level editor was only previously available to registered users of the shareware version. If you're about as creative as a stone, don't worry - there are enough levels supplied ready to go to keep you occupied for ages, including my favourite, "Boom!", which features many silly levels containing far too many exploding bricks.

All up, MegaBall 4 is another chapter in the great Breakout saga, and a good one at that. If you were ever into any of the previous versions of Megaball, and never got around to registering, this is the easy solution. If you love Breakout clones, download it - you'll like it.

This is a very nice, colourful Arkanoid clone. You have many extra things to pick up, you can blast the bricks, enlarge your paddle, use guns, etc. Very nice game with cool music and graphics.

This game has been set up to work on modern Windows (10/8/7/Vista/XP 64/32-bit) computers without problems. Please choose Download - Easy Setup (3.33 MB) .

Megaball

Megaball is inspired by MegaBall on the Amiga. It is a breakout-style game and features 20 challenging boards, 9 upgrades and a high score system. Some of the upgrades: Brickthrough, Catch, Quicksand and Lasers. The game is written in Z80 Assembler for the TI-83/84+ graphing calculator.

MegaBall on the Amiga was always one of my favorite games. The game was fast-paced and had great graphics and sound effects. The game included a level editor, which was fun to use. The objective of the game is to clear boards of bricks by releasing and bouncing around a ball. Once the ball collides with a brick, the brick disappears from the board, unless it is a special type of brick. The player controls a paddle that can interact with the ball. When the player has cleared all of the bricks from the board, the next board can be loaded.

Development

I wanted Megaball to capture the essence of the original game. Although the screen of the TI-83 is very small, I still wanted the game to look like the original. The game had to be fast-paced, just like the original.

Before creating any code, I started with the graphical assets of the game. Below you can see the sprites that are used in the game. On the left of the image, you can see the sprites that are used to create the paddle. The paddle can be dynamically changed, based on power-ups and the state of the game. The paddle can be increased in length or shortened, the paddle can fire lasers and the paddle can catch the ball using a magnetic field. In the upper-right corner of the image, you can see the power-ups. The lower-right corner shows the types of bricks that are available and the ball.

I have implemented the following power-ups, as represented in the image above:

To create the boards, I made a simple level editor. Below you can see how the level editor looks like. It was written using Borland Delphi. The boards would get compressed with another program and exported to assembly code. The image of the editor shows the first board, as can be seen in the second screenshot at the top of this page.

Emulating MegaBall

MegaBall is a breakout-style game made by Ed and Al Mackey on the Amiga platform. It's recognized as one of the best ShareWare games for that platform, winning many awards and positive reviews from the Amiga magazines of the day. Many different versions have been released spanning many years.

Although the Amiga platform is far from popular today, MegaBall may now be played on many different platforms through emulation. The most recognized Amiga emulator is UAE, and it's the recommended emulator for MegaBall, since some other emulators have difficulty running MegaBall. UAE is available for many platforms:

  • WinUAE for most versions of MicroSoft Windows
  • MacUAE for Macintosh
  • UAE for UNIX and similar systems
  • DOS-UAE for MS-DOS
  • Other versions are listed on the UAE webpage

Aside from the emulator, you'll also need KickStart ROM images and a copy of Workbench. Although these are easy to find on the net, it's technically illegal to distribute these to people who don't have them already (that is, people who didn't buy an Amiga at some point), so I can't offer them here, and don't ask me for them.

The zip file contains three ADFs, which are files that act like floppy disks to the emulator. On these floppies is the full version of MegaBall, complete with the extra music disk and board editor. Unlike most ADFs, MegaBall cannot be ran directly from these floppies. It's best that you make a directory on your hard drive somewhere where you have some space, and make a virtual hard drive to use it (in WinUAE, this is done on the "Hard Drives" panel, with the "Add Directory" button). Once you install Workbench on the hard drive, reboot the emulator from it. Then, insert the three floppies and use the installer on the first one to install MegaBall to the hard drive.

For MegaBall to work, the sound emulation mode must be set to "Emulated, 100% accurate". Sound Buffering is also recommended. Slower computers may have problems keeping up with real time, resulting in choppy-sounding music and gameplay. The best way to increase emulator efficiency is to decreace the refresh rate (on the Display Settings screen in WinUAE) as needed.

You want BIG?!

Well, here you have it! The MegaBall is the granddaddy of all exercise balls! Available in everything from the merely huge 85 cm to the absolutely enormous 180 cm size, this is a ball worth dreaming about. Now, no one needs a ball this big for routine exercise. but then nothing about the MegaBall is routine!

Unless you have a Shamu in your pool, you probably won't play catch with the MegaBall. But roll it out and watch the kids go wild (adults too!). Its uses are limited only by your imagination. Have a family pow-wow around (and atop?) the ball. Throw a Mega-party and prepare for whoops, hollers, and old-fashioned glee. Or simply sit and marvel.

Since you've grown up, has the world shrunk and lost its awesome -ness? It's time to bring back the joy, rekindle the wonder! Fanciful enough to make the glumest critic smile, the MegaBall defies expectation. It amuses and inspires. And fairly begs for collaboration and group play.

Let us know how you use your MegaBall. Better yet, send us a photo so we can all share in the fun!

The MegaBall is made by the folks who manufacture world-renowned Gymnic exercise balls. Same material as the original Gymnic, too. Not burst-resistant.

For filling a ball this big, we recommend the Theraband Power Pump . Available as an option.

This ball can be exchanged if defective. However, once it has been inflated, it cannot be returned for a refund.
