MSI Live Update Download

Update your BIOS, drivers, firmware and utilities with this application that is specifically designed to read data from MSI mainboards

MSI Live Update is a powerful tool that provides you with simple means to update your BIOS, drivers, firmware of computers that have MSI mainboards. Keeping your motherboard and graphics card drivers up-to-date is very important, as the latest versions are designed to make the devices run properly.

The application's tab-based interface is simple and well-organized, providing easy access to all its features. The program is easy to use, but it is not designed for beginner users. If you don't know what you are doing, it is advisable not to update your MSI hardware devices, as this might result in restricted access to BIOS and permanent damage to your computer.

The main window displays detailed information about your computer, such as the operating system, the motherboard model and the graphics card, the current BIOS version (for both the motherboard and the video card) as well as the last scan date and the total number of outdated items.

There are two scanning options available: 'Automatic', which instructs the program to check all the items (drivers, BIOS, utility) and find available updates, and 'Manual', which allows you to choose the items you want to search for.

When the scanning process is finished, the results are displayed in a table, where you can view the installed items and their version, access item information (including the release changelog), as well as start downloading items with a newer online version. The installation process of each item that you need to update starts right after download.

The application logs the download history and allows you to set reminders, so you don't forget to run update scans periodically. At the set time and date, a pop-up window appears, allowing you to start or postpone a new scan.

MSI Live Update is a handy desktop utility that allows you to easily scan and download the latest driver, utility and BIOS versions. Although it can help you keep your system updated at all times, you have to use it carefully.

Considerations before updating the BIOS Reviewing installation instructions
To ensure the best results, one should review all documentation from the vendor. This may be a separate document from their website, or a README extracted from the executable file via Archive Manager.
BIOS update changes previously set configurations
Some BIOS updates will add new settings within the BIOS, as well as adjust previously existing settings to something different than what was set previously. One would want to take note of the settings prior to updating, in case the desired settings do become changed, or the new feature would have an undesirable impact.
UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface)

If the system has an UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) based BIOS, one would want to backup the EFI partition first. To do so, copy the /boot/efi/EFI/ folder to a safe location. If the BIOS update either adjusts or removes it, one may restore it to its intended location, for example, via live environment.

If one has a WinPhlash based BIOS, one may follow the instructions on Acer's website here .

Asus provides within their BIOS a utility called Easy Flash. Please search the Asus website for instructions.

If you are using UEFI and your F12 boot options include "Flash BIOS upgrade", one may download the BIOS upgrade .exe from Dell's website, and put it to your /boot/EFI/ folder. Reboot and select "Flash BIOS upgrade" option. In the dialog select the .exe file you have just downloaded and continue with the process.

Website bug

First, please be advised that HP is actively blocking review of their software updates (BIOS, firmware, drivers, etc.) from linux operating systems for many PC models, based on the browser user agent string. For example, if one goes to the homepage for the model HP Pavilion Elite d5200t ATX CTO Desktop PC with any browser in Ubuntu, one will notice that the Software & Drivers tab is missing. If one uses any browser in Windows, the tab does show up. To work around this problem, one may change the URL from:

Boot into BIOS to upgrade
  • For select models (ex. HP ZBook 15 Mobile Workstation) one may reboot, press "ESC" to get into the BIOS setup, and follow the instructions in the "BIOS Upgrade" section.
Lenovo makes available up to three different methods with which to update the BIOS. They are presented in the order one should utilize them:
A self-contained bootable ISO environment. There are instances where one may not update via the Windows .exe, and only update to a certain level via the ThinkVantage System Update. Hence, it is recommended to try this first.
  • Windows only executable file.
  • ThinkVantage System Update. In certain circumstances, the Windows only executable file may not work. However, the ThinkVantage System Update has a different update implementation, that can work when the Windows only executable file does not.

    • MSI offers an update via a command from within the UEFI/BIOS to select and load a specific file from a USB drive.
    • Boot into the BIOS setup (by pressing DEL-key while MSI splash screen is shown).
    • Take note of the exact model (e.g. GE70 2oe).
    • Take note of the currently installed BIOS version (e.g. E1757IMS.517).
    • Take note of any changed configuration (as these will all be reset to defaults).
Search msi.com for the exact model (if you can't find it, try to create an account and register your device via its serial number from inside the battery compartment).
  • Download and extract update file (

8 MB) to a USB stick following this guide .
  • Reboot into BIOS and start the update by selecting the file (e.g. E1757IMS.520).
  • If after the update Ubuntu isn't starting and instead fails with a red failure dialog, check the boot options in your BIOS (e.g. try "UEFI with CSM").
    • Unfortunately, for many models, Samsung does not provide via their website the option to see the latest BIOS version, the release notes for a given BIOS version, or allow one to download a dedicated, OS vendor independent BIOS upgrade method. Instead, they provide a Windows only software update program (SW Update), that is used to both check if a BIOS update is available, and if so, then download and install via this program.

However, as a convenience, a list of models with BIOS versions are available for reference here .

Toshiba has made available a BIOS .exe for certain models (ex. Toshiba Satellite L305D-S5934) that when executed, generates an ISO to burn to disc, and in turn allows one to boot to the disc to update the BIOS. This .exe was successfully run in Ubuntu via WINE to generate this ISO, the ISO burned in Ubuntu, and the BIOS updated successfully. Vendor independent updating methods Windows System Repair Disc

In Windows 7, create a System Repair disc. Put the BIOS file on a spare USB drive (formatted as FAT32), boot to to the System Repair disc, navigate to the USB via command line and execute the file.
  • In Windows 8.1, create a USB recovery drive. Put the BIOS file on the USB drive.
  • Boot into Windows
    • One may do this via swapping in dedicated drive, or dual boot.
In a Windows 8.1 Enterprise environment, use Windows To Go .
  • Request recovery media from the vendor, so one may utilize it for an update.
  • Boot to FreeDOS and execute the .exe file. If one is using UEFI, one may want to use Legacy mode, versus UEFI.
  • While Using WINE worked once for one person, for one piece of hardware, at one point in time of Ubuntu and WINE development, it would be considered a last resort. It would be conservative to believe that using WINE to update the BIOS holds a potentially higher risk in comparison to using Windows to damage your motherboard beyond troubleshooting, necessitating a warranty event or purchase of a new motherboard.

In about 10 min. I show you how to update the BIOS on your MSI 990FXA-GD80 motherboard, with details for version 13.2 using a USB stick. With my music! Please enjoy. Also, please read over the following I've written here:

    AMD Memory Guide reference: http://support.amd.com/en-us/kb-articles/Pages/ddr3memoryfrequencyguide.aspx

Important Note: In my video I suggested halfway through, that one of the first things to do would be to save your settings to a flash drive so you can load them into the BIOS later, after you update your BIOS. Please do so with caution, as one time I think I had a BIOS problem due to loading the saved settings from an old BIOS into the new BIOS after updating it to one of the 13.x versions, but not resetting to defaults and saving & exiting & rebooting first. I think there might be a conflict between the old settings and the new BIOS trying to read those settings. I don't think it's a problem with the 13.5 BIOS because the system tells you that basically you can't load the old settings in when you go to do that.

I strongly recommend either taking pictures of your BIOS settings or copying them down so you have them for future reference regardless of which BIOS version you are upgrading to.

For more info, please check the 1st couple minutes of my 13.5 video: http://youtu.be/Y8aJGfC8AFE

I had to RMA my previous board (NON-v2). So I'm posting a suggestion for those about to update their BIOS. I updated my bios while using phenom II x4 970 deneb CPU, from v11.11 to 11.13 in anticipation of upgrading to my new CPU, the AMD FX-8320 vishera. Bios was flashed successfully; and was able to enter the bios and load previous setting profile. Then after I rebooted, after that the mainboard always hangs at POST debug code "99" and no boot. After I contacted MSI, I still wasn't sure what really caused this problem. I'm using a new v2-marked board now. The only difference, like people have been saying, is in the BIOS revision that shipped with the new boards.

My suggestion though, for BIOSes up to 11.13, is to be sure you're flashing the recommended way, i.e. from a properly-created usb drive, on default settings, FULLY-supported cpu (according to the cpu-support list on MSI website) and no overclocked settings in place, etc. THEN, if you get the message that the flash was successful and you're done, (on BIOS 11.13 you should be back to the C:\ prompt, then shut off the PC, remove your flash drive, and then power-on and immediately go back into the BIOS by pressing DEL.

====Here's the important part of my suggestion==== IF you manage to get into your BIOS screen, then I highly recommend that you MANUALLY set your settings the way you like, NO overclocking yet, until you can confirm that you can REBOOT your computer! Just set the necessary things like AHCI mode for your SSD/HDD, boot order, RAM speed, etc. but whatever you do don't load a previous settings profile from your usb drive. This is where I think my board got confused with some new settings in the new BIOS and some older settings from the profile that maybe didn't match the new BIOS! Like voltages, timings, or other settings.

    Thanks, and safe flashing!

    UPDATE AMI BIOS v1

UPDATE AMI BIOS v1.2 на MSI A75MA-G55 с помощью Live Update 5
