EmacsWiki: Word Count

Word Count The Simple Solution: Counting Words on Demand

1. Select a region.

2. Run M-=, or M-| wc for older versions of emacs.

3. See the count of lines, words, and characters, in the mode-line.

Show the number of words in the mode-line

The minor mode ‘word-count-mode’ displays the number of words in the current buffer. It is quite handy:

As you type, it shows the number of characters in the buffer, the number of words, and the number of lines: “WC:148/40/4”. You can set a marker to the point where you want to begin counting (when you enable ‘word-count-mode’ in a buffer, the marker is at the position of point), and you can set a region to count.

For emacs24 compatibility, comment out the line that reads “(make-local-hook hook)”.

wc-mode: show "wc"-like info in the mode-line

wcMode ( ‘wc-mode’ ) is another minor mode that does essentially the same thing: it displays the character count, word count and line count for the buffer in the mode line (similar to the output of the Unix wc command). If there’s an active region, it displays that information for the region instead. It requires Emacs 24 or newer.

All this small “one-liner” package does is set the ‘mode-line-position’ variable appropriately (see the code ), conveniently wrapped in a minor-mode to make it toggleable.

Somewhat related: modeline-posn

Library modeline-posn.el shows, in the mode line, the number of characters (not words) in the active region. That is, the buffer size is replaced in the mode line by the region size whenever the region is active. See ModeLinePosition .

Various other ways to show the number of words

Here is a function that counts words in the region.

I wrote a quick elisp file based on this logic: wc.el. I can’t understand why something like it isn’t standard. --TheronTlax

If you are like me, you can’t remember whether it is word-count or count-words, so what I did is I defined an alias:

For those without their DotEmacs. you can find the number of words in a buffer with the command

  • M-< M-x count-matches RET \w+ RET

or count the number of words in the region with the command

  • C-x n n M-x count-matches RET \w+ RET C-x n w

This is how the function works: count-matches counts whatever matches from point to the end of the buffer. So the first things was to use a RegularExpression. In this case

sw matches a word character. Now all we need is to narrow the buffer (see Narrowing ) to the region, put point at the beginning of the accessible buffer, and call count-matches. save-excursion will restore point when it is done, and save-restriction will restore the previous state of narrowing (or no narrowing at all) when it is done.

Other solutions

Using this definition, we can do:

A defun which work just like wc shell command:

Now I can’t tell whether I’ve stolen it from someone or wrote it myself ;) – mina86

Use wc the unix way

To pipe the contents of the file in the current buffer to the wc commandline tool, just add this to your .emacs:

To pipe the contents of region to the wc command-line tool:

Maybe add a keybinding (C-c w):

How many times was each word used?

To get all the words used in the region and the number of times they have been used, use the following:

Using this on the following region:

Word Counter

Word Counter websites give writers and students free access to online word count technology to help those who need to keep an accurate count of their words. There are a whole number of sites that offer the free word counters, so I’ll direct you to a few that have caught my fancy.

You might ask yourself why someone needs a word counting function, especially if they have Microsoft Word or some other word processing program on their computer. I’ll give you my own personal reason for the second part of that question. I’m a little different, so when I write for something like this blog, I either write it directly into the Word Skit blog dashboard, or (more frequently) I write the words in Notepad. Notepad takes the formatting out of the script, so my words are free of any html that might screw up what I write when I post it.

But that means I don’t have a word count function readily handy. So if I’m wanting to know exactly how much I’ve rambled, I’ll just click on a word counter web page that I have in Favorites and find out real quickly. Obviously, all of that is idiosyncratic, but it’s what I’m comfortable with after all these years and I’m probably not going to change. I imagine there are a hundred other reasons you might want to use an e-word counter, which is why they exist. I suppose word counters online are like online calculators. Sure, there are other ways to do it, but everything is more fun on the internet.

People Who Could Use a Word Counter

There are certain types of people who need their words counted. Here are several of the types, though I’m probably omitting all kinds of people who like to keep an accurate online word count.

  • Students Writing Papers For School – Whether you are writing an essay in grade school or a term paper for college, most of your instructors are going to want you to stick to a word count. Most of the time, that means a minimum word counter, so you’re always clicking about seeing if you’ve hit the threshold. In other cases, you might be long-winded, and not have to figure out later on that you’re going to have to edit your essay. (I had a professor who stopped reading a term paper at a certain point if the paper went over the count, counting off for the person not technically finishing the paper – or finishing it in the assigned format.) So word counters are a must for student writers.
  • E-Writers and Freelance Writers – If you’re writing for just about anyone online, you’re probably going to get paid by the word. So if you’re writing on eLance or some other online publishing market, you’ll want an accurate online word counter that your employer can reference. This way, the two of you always agree on the word count. If you each use your computer’s word count function, you’re inevitably going to come up with different numbers. That can lead to tension, so get on the same page by using the same word counter.
  • E-Publishers – For the very same reason, if you’re a webmaster or e-publisher who hires writing talent, you’ll want to have a reliable word counter at your disposal, so you and your writers can agree on payment. You don’t want to pay any more than you have to, and you don’t want a reputation for stiffing people on their work, so a good word counter eliminates those problems.
  • Article Writers – Often, a writer will have a specific sized article that their editor wants. When you’re writing for a newspaper, you’ll need to have an article a particular size. So you’ll be counting words particularly closely. The online word count tool helps journalists of all stripes: both article writers and their editors.
  • Javascript Word Counter

The “Java Script Word Counter ” is my favorite word counting tool on the internet. It’s simple and no-frills and allows me to quickly count my words, then cut-and-paste the words where I want to put them. I think there are a number of other interesting resources for bloggers and webmasters on the Javascript Kit site, such as coding forums, references and tutorials, but I’ve actually never used them. With this word counter, I get in and get out on this one page.

Word Count Tool – Free Online Tool to Count Number of Words

The “Word Count Tool ” is another no-nonsense word counter designed with a pleasant and simple orange outline. Word Count Tool dotcom describes itself as a “free & fast online word counting tool”. The word counting website also describes exactly how it conducts its word count, so you know exactly how to adjust your figures if you have a teacher or professor who is a stickler for word counts.

Word count - Vim Tips Wiki

    Word count

    created  2004 · complexity  basic · author  Hans fugal · version  6.0

It's easy to count the total number of words, or the number of occurrences of a particular word, and more.

    Counting number of words Edit

To count the number of words in the current buffer, press g then Ctrl-g.

To count the number of words in a block, select the block (for example, type V5j to select 6 lines) and again press g then Ctrl-g.

    The output looks like this:

If you prefer, you can call an external program using the "%" file name expansion. For example, in Unix you could do the following to get the word count of the entire file:

The initial :w writes the current file so that the external program can read it. An alternative (which does not require saving the buffer to a file), is to use the command:

The above writes the current buffer to the standard input of the external wc program. :help :write_c

    Live word count Edit

Some people think the total number of words in the entire file is so important that it needs to be on the screen at all times.

To get a live word count to show up in the vim status bar is a little tricky, but you only need to do this once.

You can edit your vimrc file so the word count is always visible in the status line. [1] [2] [3]

(FIXME: give step-by-step instructions for one or two simple approaches)

Vim allows you to customize your definition of what counts as a "word". For example, people using Vim to edit raw HTML pages may want to tweak the definition so only words actually displayed by a web browser are counted as words, but none of the formatting tags count as a word.

Counting number of printed words in a LaTeX document Edit

If you LaTeX and you need a printed word count (for a journal paper, etc.), wc's output isn't directly useful, since its count includes all markup and other non-printed parts of the file. If you LaTeX in Windows, use something like detex to strip the markup away, leaving the actual text, before piping to wc. Unxutils or Cygwin will be of interest to Windows users needing utilities taken for granted by *nix users, including wc.

An example mapping to F3 is given below. The current buffer is written to the stdin of detex, which writes the detex-ed file to the stdin of wc. If something is selected in visual, visual-block, or visual-line mode, only the selection is counted, otherwise the entire buffer is counted.

In Windows, this could be made less obtrusive by returning wc's output to a discreet error message at the bottom of the buffer or window, rather than popping up a console every time. Suggestions are welcome. I was surprised to not find anything like this in existing Vim scripts, or packaged with vim-latex, which I've used for quite a while. Please replace this section with the relevant link if such a thing exists.

EDIT: Texcount Perl script can be also used for this matter, which is quite a clever piece of software, but unfortunately, it does not count everything perfectly.

Counting occurrences of a pattern Edit

Use the :s substitute command with the n flag (counts number of hits; no changes occur) to count the number of occurrences of a pattern. For example:

Combine this with the ability to Search and replace in a visual selection. and you can count the occurrences in a portion of a file as well!

For example to count space delimited words in a file you could use:

A quick way to list all occurrences of the word under the cursor it to type [I (which displays each line containing the current keyword, in this file and in included files when using a language such as C). :help [I

    Related plugins Edit

The WC plugin counts words according to "Strunk & White" rules, for fiction, novel, or journalism writing.

The SearchPosition plugin shows the relation to search pattern matches in a range or buffer. The mappings, command and operator provided by this plugin search a range or the entire buffer for a pattern (defaulting to the current search pattern), and print a summary of the number of occurrences above, below and on the current line, for example:
