Managing WebCenter Portal Backup, Recovery, and Cloning

41 Managing WebCenter Portal Backup, Recovery, and Cloning

This chapter describes techniques and tools for backing up and restoring WebCenter Portal installations.

Permissions:

The content of this chapter is intended for system administrators.

For more information on which roles and permissions are required to deploy portals, templates, assets, connections, and extensions, see Section 39.6, "Permissions Required to Perform WebCenter Portal Life Cycle Operations."

41.1 Understanding WebCenter Portal Back Up and Recovery

To recover data from disasters, such as the loss of database hardware, inadvertent removal of data from file or database, it is important to back up individual portals as well as the entire WebCenter Portal instance on a frequent basis. The frequency of your backups depend on how often the underlying information stored by WebCenter Portal changes in your particular environment, and how much time and amount of information could acceptably be lost. Incremental or partial backups may be applied where the data is critical to the business and must be restored due to a failure.

WebCenter Portal provides various back up options. Administrators can back up:

One or more portals, or portal hierarchies

WebCenter Portal provides export and import WLST commands for backing up and restoring individual portals. For details, see Section 41.3, "Backing Up Individual Portals" and Section 41.4, "Restoring Portals from a Backup."

Entire WebCenter Portal environment

Back up and recovery of WebCenter Portal as well as various back-end components can be managed through database export and import utilities, and various other tools. For more information, see Section 41.6, "Backing Up an Entire WebCenter Portal Installation" and Section 41.8, "Using Scripts to Back Up and Restore WebCenter Portal."

WebCenter Portal metadata, data, and security

WebCenter Portal provides export and import WLST commands and a methodology for backing up or migrating data owned by WebCenter Portal: WebCenter Portal MDS data (including shared assets, business role pages, and system page customizations), database data (WEBCENTER database schema only), and security. For details, see Section 41.5, "Migrating Entire WebCenter Portal to Another Target."

This chapter only describes techniques for backing up and restoring WebCenter Portal data. For information about Oracle Fusion Middleware back up and recovery strategies, see the "Advanced Administration: Backup and Recovery" section in Oracle Fusion Middleware Administrator's Guide .

How to Write a Back Up and Restore Application for SharePoint Portal Server 2003

How to Write a Back Up and Restore Application for SharePoint Portal Server 2003 Introduction

Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003 uses a group of products and technologies—Microsoft Office 2003, Microsoft SQL Server 2000 SP3, and Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services—to enable you to create a unified portal site that connects the entire organization. SharePoint Portal Server 2003 builds on top of Windows SharePoint Services architecture to provide additional functionality, such as enterprise integration, content management, organization, publication, and connected collaboration. However, because of differences in functionality between Windows SharePoint Services and SharePoint Portal Server 2003, you should use only SharePoint Portal Server tools to back up and restore sites created with SharePoint Portal Server.

The SharePoint Portal Server Data Backup and Restore utility is the SharePoint Portal Server tool you use to back up and restore sites created with SharePoint Portal Server 2003. You can access this utility from the SharePoint Portal Server group on the All Programs menu, on the server running SharePoint Portal Server. For information about backing up and restoring sites created with SharePoint Portal Server 2003, see the Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003 Administrator's Guide .

Backing Up and Restoring Sites Programmatically

SharePoint Portal Server 2003 also offers a Backup and Restore API to enable customers and third parties to develop custom backup-and-restore applications. This API is contained in the mssctlbm.dll and mssitlbm.dll that are provided as private assemblies in SharePoint Portal Server 2003. You can find the Backup and Restore API in the following path on the SharePoint Portal Server 2003 CD:

. The GUI config tool will typically be run by Joe Schmoe and will need to write our various settings to configure the operation of the NT Service, which will likely be running in the security context . if Joe writes settings to one of his user directories then that's not too much use. . On the other hand, from what I understand Joe won't have access to write to the program directory either - so where/how should the configuration settings for this NT Service be read/written by the GUI tool that Joe runs, such that they can then be read/used by the NT Service that they're destined for? .

  • Restoring a Portal Site

    Restoring a Portal Site

    Restoring a Portal Site

You can restore a portal site to an empty virtual server on a different server farm. For example, if you want to move a portal site from Server A on one server farm to Server B on a second server farm, you would do the following:

    1. Create a virtual server on Server B.
    2. On Server B, go to the Create Portal Site for Server Server B page and select the option to restore a portal site.
    3. Specify the name of the server that stores the content database.
    4. Specify the name of the content database. If the name of the portal site you are restoring is MyPortalSite, the name of the content database is MyPort1_SITEDB.
    5. Specify the name of the server that stores the user profile database.
    6. Specify the name of the user profile database.
    7. Specify the name of the server that stores the services database.
    8. Specify the name of the services database.
    9. Select the virtual server you created on Server B.
The following limits apply to the number of portal sites supported on a server farm:
    • If the server farm is not part of a shared services environment, the server farm supports up to 15 portal sites.
    • If the server farm provides or uses shared services, the server farm supports up to 100 portal sites. Internet Information Services (IIS) limits the number of Web sites running on one server to 64. To create more than 64 Web sites on a front-end Web server in a server farm that provides or uses shared services, you must modify a registry setting. For more information, see Creating a Portal Site .
You can restore a portal site from the Create Portal Site for Server server_name page. You can access the Create Portal Site for Server server_name page from multiple locations:
    • On the SharePoint Portal Server Central Administration for Server server_name page, in the Portal Site and Virtual Server Configuration section, click Create a portal site .
    • On the SharePoint Portal Server Central Administration for Server server_name page, in the Portal Site and Virtual Server Configuration section, click List and manage portal sites. On the Manage Portal Sites page, click Create Portal Site.

Note В В You can also click Restore Portal Site to get to that task directly.

This option restores the portal site without restoring the search configuration and content indexes. The information in the databases in restored, but the default search configuration for new portal sites is used. To fully restore a portal, you will have to follow the procedure described in the later section "Restore a Portal Site from the SharePoint Portal Server Data Backup and Restore Program."

Regardless of how you restore the portal site, alternate access settings are not backed up but are stored by the configuration database. If you restore to the same deployment, these settings will be intact. If not, you must reconfigure alternate access settings.

Restore a Portal Site from SharePoint Portal Server Central Administration

How to restore a portal site from SQL database backups in SPS 2003

Right before the scheduled time for production upgrade from SPS 2003 to MOSS 2007, my customer's SPS 2003 production environment was down. The database server was running on SQL Server 2000. The DBA told us ALL the SharePoint datababases just disappeared overnight and they didn't have any script to track who deleted them or it's virus or some other kind of intrusion (unbelievable?!).

Anyway, I was asked to help with restoring the SPS 2003 farm using all the database backups including the CONFIG database, but restoring a CONFIG database doesn't work most of the times since it can be easily out of synch with the content databases (refer to the SPS 20903 resource kit http://www.microsoft.com/technet/windowsserver/sharepoint/V2/reskit/c2861881x.mspx ). That's also my customer's case. They were seeing all kinds error message when trying to navigate through portal site - "invalid configuration database (offline)", etc. So there's no point of trying to fix that, we just decided to rebuild the configuration database in stead.

The following steps decribe how I restored the SPS 2003 from the SQL databases that were restored from the backups in the tape:

    1. Disconnect all the servers from the farm
    2. Configure the configuration database with a new name Portal_Config_New
    3. Add back all the servers in the farm pointing to the new configuration database
    4. Unextend the Virtual Server your portal site resdies using Remove Windows SharePoint Services from Virtual Server in Central Admin. Note: if your Virtual Server has been extended, trying to restore a portal site will fail with error complaining the VS has been extended.
    5. In the SPS admin, click on Create a Portal Site
    6. Select Restore a portal site
    7. Type in your portal content database, profile database and service database. In my case they were in the format of portal_SITE, portal_PROF, portal_SERV.
    8. Submit the above and the portal site should be restored. Note: if you have already added your portal content db back to the farm the restoring a portal site will fail with error message complaining the site/database already exists. Delete the portal content db from Manage Content Databases and repeat steps 4-6
    9. After Verifying the portal site is up running, add the rest of content databases using Manange Content Databases from your Central Admin site.
    10. Verify your portal and other team sites.
    11. Note: You may have to redeploy custom web parts or other applications that you had under the Virtual Server, but since my customer was going to upgrade to MOSS and retiring the SPS 2003 environment soon, they were ok with not redeploying. They just wanted to keep the SPS 2003 environment for post-upgrade comparison.

IBuySpy Portal vs. Portal Starter Kit

I am new to portals and relatively new to ASP.NET and I would appreciate some clarification about IBS and the Portal Starter Kit. I have read existing postings and come away with the impression that the Portal Starter Kit is a more updated version of IBS, which is not being further developed. But then I notice a lot of developer activity on the forums for both IBS and Portal Starter Kit and Microsoft features both prominently and independently on the ASP.NET site. I have been leaning toward IBS because I have the Wrox book Building an ASP.NET Intranet to guide my initial work in add.

use portal starter kit with community starter kit

I am using the portalvbsdk and community starterkit but both have different user login database, is it possible to connect both starter kits with only one user login panel? Sorry, I am very new with ASP.NET I don't think so. The permissions in portal are different than permissions in community. If a person only logs in one and not the other, the permission settings will always be wrong for the one which has no login.

I Buy Spy Portal vs Portal Starter Kit

There seems to be lots of confusion between the IBS Portal and the Portal Starter Kit. Lots of people publish quastions relating to the IBS here, and lots of people answer to questions about the Portal Starter Kit as if it was the IBS. It might be a good idea if a few people that are well familiar with both versions post some info as to the differences. This will help many not only with their confusion but also chose which one to use, based on these differences. Thanks When I started this thread I was sure it will be flooded with opinions and comparisons between IBS Portal and Portal St.

Can DNN Portal & Child Portals use the same user database?

Hello, I have a need for specific DNN configuration - kind of "many subportals in portal": - main portal as home (with general info, search module and links to subportals) - Windows FAQ - several subportals (childs), each for a specific topic (FAQ's, articles, etc) - Windows NT - Windows 2000 - Windows XP - Windows 2003 - DotNetNuke - .Net Developers - Magazine - content for subscribers - etc - all portals should share a common user database and roles so that a single login allows for access to any of them, depending on.

Database issue while installing Portal Starter Kit.

I have MSDE running on my local work-station under the machine name (and not under 'localhost'). I am trying to install the ASP.NET Portal Starter Kit (to be host under IIS on my machine). When it reaches the step for database, I choose 'local' and then it comes with the dialog box of 'Test Connection' with 'localhost' written in the drop-down. This 'Test Connection' fails and as the drop down is non-editable, I even cannot enter my machine name onto it. It exits the complete setup there on. I next tried 'remote' database as installation option, but because I do not have Query Analyz.
