I have an old game engine (sort of) based on DirectX 10, which I've been planning to move to DX 11. I have also just installed Windows 8 and VS 2013 and, while trying to run this old project I've learnt that DirectX SDK has been deprecated and now replaced by Windows 8 SDK. In this case I wonder whether it makes sense to update to DX 11 or should I try and make my engine use the new Windows 8 SDK. There are several things I'd like to know before I make the decision:
1) Is Windows 8 SDK the thing to learn now or is DX 11 still relevant? Like, if you want to learn C++ you should learn C++11, so if you want to learn Direct3D now, you should learn Windows 8 SDK?
2) There are plenty of great resources for learning DirectX SDK: a lot of tutorials, Microsoft's own samples. NVidia Graphics SDK samples. AMD Radeon SDK samples etc. Are there any similar quality materials available for Windows 8's Direct3D or just msdn at the moment?
3) Will my Windows 8 SDK based engine run only on Windows 8?
4) Any first hand experience / comparisons between the two?

Технология DirectX впервые была введена в действие в 1995 году и интегрирована в Windows в качестве стандартной платформы для управления мультимедийными процессами, программами и их интерфейсом (multimedia application programming interfaces - API's).
Для установки обновлений Директа в систему, необходимо распаковать скачанный c Microsoft Download Center архив по нижепреведенным ссылкам в какую-либо временную папку (например Windows\Temp), открыть ее по окончании распаковки, найти в ней файл DXSETUP.EXE и запустить его. После установки файлов Директа, желательно дать вручную перезвгрузку. Временные файлы из папки Windows\Temp затем можно удалить.
Файлы Директа могут быть установлены как в обычном, так и в безопасном режиме описанным выше способом.

Для того, чтобы узнать, какая версия Директа установлена в Вашей системе, используйте средство диагностики - DXDiag.exe, находящееся в папке Windows\system32
В остальных системах, выпущенных позднее XP, NET Framework уже установлен изначально, что, конечно, не избавляет Вас от необходимости обновлять его через Windows Update.

The updated Windows SDK can be used to build apps for the following Windows operating systems: Windows 8.1, Windows 8, Windows Server 2012, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008. Also, you are advised to install the latest updates and patches from Microsoft Update before installing the Windows 8.1 SDK .
The Windows Software Development Kit (SDK) for Windows 8.1 contains headers, libraries, and tools you can use when you create apps that run on Windows operating systems. You can use the Windows SDK, along with your chosen development environment, to write Windows Store apps and desktop apps for Windows 8.1 as well as Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2012, Windows Server 2008 R2, and Windows Server 2008.

The Microsoft Windows Software Development Kit (SDK) Update for Windows Vista provides documentation, samples, header files, libraries, and tools you need to develop applications that run on Windows. This release of the SDK supplies updated compilers and documentation.
The updated compilers are the same ones that recently shipped in Visual Studio 2005 Service Pack 1. This SDK also includes the samples, headers, tools and libraries that shipped in the Software Development Kit for Vista in November, 2006.
This download contains the SDK only. To build .NET Framework 3.0 applications, you must have .NET Framework 3.0 Runtime Components.
