How To Download 1080p or 4K Video From YouTube

Sometime around October of last year, Google introduced the DASH Protocol which blocked video download add-ons from downloading 1080p, meaning that your old trusty video downloaders, like the Firefox add-on Video DownloadHelper, can now only download 720p or lower quality. However, in this article I will show you how you can easily download 1080p or 4K videos from YouTube for easy offline viewing, regardless of which browser you use.

To start, you will need to download a free program called 4K Video Downloader via 4K Download. The program is available for Windows, Mac OS X 10.6 and higher, plus Ubuntu 32-bit and 64-bit. For this article, I will be using Windows 7 Ultimate x64 and downloading the trailer for Elysium, which is here if you would like to test the program out.

Once you have downloaded and installed the program, open it up. Now go to the video on YouTube that you would like to download to watch later, and copy the URL.

Now in the 4K Video Downloader, simply hit Paste URL, which will automatically add the URL that you just copied to its download list.

A new window will now open giving you all the download options for that video. As you can see from my screenshot, I have the 1080p option available to me as well as the higher quality 4K version. Once you have decided which version you would like to download, simply hit Download.

Note, you can change the default download location if you wish, and if there are subtitles embedded with the video, then by default the program will attempt to also download these too.

Once you hit Download, your video will start to download.

As stated above, if there are any subtitles available to the video then these will also be downloaded so you can add them to your video later. Adding subtitles to a video is very simple if you are using VLC media player. Simply have the subtitles file in the same folder as the video and it should be able to read it. If not, just select Subtitle from the top of VLC and then choose, ‘Add Subtitle’. Browse for the file and hit OK.
