9 Ways to Boost Your Gaming PC or Laptop

9 Ways to Boost Your Gaming Rig

PC gaming is a $25 billion industry – and it’s growing! No longer is it limited to the young folks, but the industry now delivers blockbuster titles that bring in more revenue than some movies. If you’re one of those gamers, we’ve got a couple of treats for you over the next couple of weeks and months: This week, we’ll kick off a new series around optimizing your PC for the latest games and also how to tweak the blockbuster releases of 2014, such as GTA VDark Souls 2  or Watch Dogs. with great tips, downloads and our own AVG performance product, which help boost performance!

If there’s anything that’s not optimized about your PC, your games speed will suffer: they’ll stutter and will look not as beautiful as they could. That’s what this series about: making your games look stunning, fluid and simply more enjoyable.

However, optimizing your PC is just part of the equation: Games themselves have ton of hidden potential that can drastically improve the way they look and feel.    For that reason, over the next few months we’ll look at the biggest games and discuss how to maximize their potential. Which games you ask? so far, this is on the list:

Anyway, before we dive into each game, let’s have a look at the top things you need to do in order to get your PC or laptop in shape for the latest blockbuster releases:

#1 – Upgrade Your Graphics Drivers for An Immediate Speed Boost

Your graphics card is the center piece of your gaming experience (more on that below), but it can’t unfold its true performance without the proper software installed on your PC or laptop.  Going from the driver that came either with your PC or with your graphics card to the latest version can make a large performance difference. Just look at nVidias latest graphics drivers, for example:

As you can see, even with some older games (such as Skyrim or Tomb Raider) you will see a performance increase between 6% and 64% on a GeForce 700 series GPU. That’s because game makers and the big graphic behemoths like AMD, nVidia and Intel constantly work together to make games faster. So let’s have a look at where to get the latest drivers for the three big graphic card types out there:

  • Nvidia GeForce owners:  Go to http://www.geforce.com/drivers. Next, select your graphics card and your Windows version from the list and hit the “Start Search” button. My tip: Always go for the driver marked as “BETA”. This isn’t quite a finished driver, but they all run as stable and good as the final release these days and will likely give you even more performance!
  • ATI Radeon owners:  ATI fans go to http://sites.amd.com/us/game/downloads/Pages/downloads.aspx  and select the appropriate device. This will give you access to the latest official driver which you can download and install. To get the beta driver with more performance improvements or features, head over to http://support.amd.com/en-us/kb-articles/Pages/latest-catalyst-windows-beta.aspx .
  • For Intel HD Graphics owners:  Mostly found on ultrabooks or tablets, the Intel graphics chipsets are the weakest of the bunch. I wouldn’t recommend doing any sort of gaming on the older integrated Intel HD chipsets (such as the HD 3000 or earlier) – unless you’re heavily into slideshows instead of smooth gameplay – but their latest graphics chipsets are powerful enough to play even recent titles. albeit not at the highest possible resolution or with all the bells and whistles turned on.To get updated drivers go to the Graphics driver page of the Intel Download Center.
Wait, how do I even know what graphics card I own?

Not a problem: To find out the maker and exact serial number, all you need to do is follow these steps.  First, go to “Control Panel ” and head to “Hardware and Sound ”. From here, click on “Device Manager ”:

This will bring up a list of all the built-in devices of your system. Head over to where it says “Display adapters ”:

In these cases, you’ll see an Alienware X51 gaming rig with two graphic chips (the nVidia is usually always the faster one) and a laptop with a GeForce GT 650M. At any rate, make sure you’re using the latest drivers!

#2 – Supercharge Your Graphics Card: A Slight Overclock Doesn’t Hurt!

Your gaming performance is mostly dependent on the power of your graphics chip – even more so than on how much memory your have or how fast your processor is! The bottleneck and the reason for stuttering gameplay is in almost all cases the graphics chip. To improve performance, you may want to look at running the graphics card beyond the factory speed setting – or in other words: overclocking! Now, 5-10 years ago, I wouldn’t have recommended overclocking as it posed a significant threat to your hardware, but nowadays most systems turn themselves off automatically before they take any damage. Besides, I only recommend a slight overclock by about 10-15%.

On my desktop gaming PC, an Alienware X51, I pushed the GeForce GTX 660 TI roughly 15-20% above its factory clock. On my main laptop, a MacBook Pro with Retina Display and a GeForce 650M running Windows, I always push the GPU from its factory 900 MHz to 1035 MHz (CPU) and the memory clock from 1800 MHz to 2100 MHz with no problems.

Bear in mind that overclocking increases the stress on and temperature of all of your hardware, not just the CPU or GPU, so it should be done with extreme care. In both cases, I ended up with a system that’s 5° Celsius hotter than before, but still well within the limits:

To overclock the GPU, I recommend two tools:

GPU Tweak  – a classic overclocking tool from ASUS.

EVGA Precision X  – allows overclocking of both the GPU and memory clocks.

Using 3DMark 11 I measured that overclocking my system as described above yielded a 10% performance boost:

#3 – Boost Your Games with AVG PC TuneUp’s “Uninstaller” and “Program Deactivator”

Windows® keeps getting slower and slower with each program you install on your PC or laptop – and that has a direct effect on all of your games! The reason for this is that a lot of programs run some sort of background activity, even when they’re not being used. AVG makes it easy to uninstall programs that you don’t use and even reduce the impact of ones that you need.

Uninstall those old programs you don’t need!  Download AVG PC TuneUp from this page  (don’t worries, the 15 day trial works fine). Once you’ve installed the suite, go to the “Optimize” category and click on “Uninstall Programs ” first. Now what sets us apart from the built-in Windows uninstaller is a filtering feature that allows you to look for programs you haven’t used in ages. Click on “Filter list ” and go to “Rarely used programs ” and “Programs not used for a long time ”.

Found a program you don’t need? Click the “Uninstall ” button!

Turn off programs you need!  But what about all those other programs you use on a regular basis that are still reducing your day-to-day performance? Well, with our AVG Program Deactivator, you can turn them off safely. Just go to “Turn off programs ” and browse through the list of all applications that affect your PCs performance.

By flipping the switch to “Disabled ”, our little helper turns off all background activity of your programs when you don’t need them and turns it back on when you actually do. In short: with no heavy background tasks, your PC will run almost as good as new and your games will run faster.

#4 – Upgrade Your Graphics Card [Desktop only]

Earlier last year I noticed that my Late 2011 Radeon 7850 was quickly running out of steam with the latest titles such as Tomb Raider or Crysis 3. Gameplay was choppy at 1080p with full details. Since I wanted the full graphical experience and also did not want to spend more than $300, I opted for the best bang for the buck which was – in my opinion – the GeForce GTX 660 TI (I went for the EVGA version ). There’s even a newer version, the 770, out now.

Carbon Fiber, Silver

(USB, DisplayPort, HDMI, DVI, PS2/Keyboard, RJ45)

Наиболее актуальные такие заглушки могут быть для мобильной электроники

Б) Заглушки для блока питания (4-Pin ATX, 6-Pin PCI, SATA)

В) Заглушки для материнской платы

В данной записи Вы могли ознакомиться с предметами, позволяющими придать проводам оригинальный вид.

Хочется подчеркнуть, цель заметки - ознакомительная.

Increase any PC - s performance with these 10 steps

Increase any PC's performance with these 10 steps

There's so much information out there about PC performance (especially on Windows machines), it's difficult to be sure what's right and what's not so helpful. Here are 10 proven performance enhancements you can make to your computer, many of which are free.

This blog post was originally published in the 10 Things Blog .

1: Get rid of malware

New machines shouldn't have malware on them. But one of the most common causes of the "my PC used to be fast, and now it isn't!" complaint is actually the presence of malware. Malware can sneak onto a computer in a zillion different ways and quite often it sits in the background slowing your machine as it sends out spam emails, searches for other computers to infect, works on cracking cryptography, or performs any number of the other nefarious tasks that hackers like to use their botnet slaves for. There's a good chance that the malware brought even more friends with it (that's often how you see computers with thousands of viruses on them not long after the initial infection), and the infection may be bad enough to justify a wipe and reload. My first step in investigating a slow system is usually a virus scan.

2: Upgrade to a better video card

For typical business productivity tasks, a video card probably isn't an upgrade that will have a lot of value. But for gamers and other similar uses, a video card is a slam-dunk upgrade. If your current card and motherboard support SLI or CrossFireX, adding a second card and bridging them will be a good option as well. In some scenarios, better video cards can be a huge benefit even without heavy onscreen video work, because certain applications can leverage the GPUs for calculations.

3: Get a faster drive

Many times, the real performance issue is the speed of disks. Look at numbers like the RPMs, cache size, seek speed, and transfer rate to justify buying a faster drive. Often, a good drive will seem slow because the computer's power settings are allowing it to spin down. You may want to consider changing these settings to make sure that the disk is more likely to be ready to work when you need it to. While the SSD vs. hard disk debate is still continuing, SSDs usually seem to feel faster to users. Boot times are usually cut for sure. But something about an SSD makes a system feel more responsive or "snappy" to use, and for day-to-day work, that's a great feeling.

4: Address hardware and driver issues

All too often, system slowness is actually a sign of hardware problems. For example, if your CPU isn't being properly cooled, it will often have its speed reduced in an effort to keep it from overheating. Recoverable errors with disk access can kill your throughput while not showing up as a dead drive. And bad hardware drivers can often make the whole system slow, especially video drivers. Using utilities to check your CPU speed and various temperatures, scanning for hard drive errors, and updating your drivers is a good start to investigating performance problems. Often, problems caused by hardware or drivers are not just poor speeds, but system flakiness too.

5: Use a RAID

Using a RAID can dramatically lower the read and write speeds of your disks, depending on the RAID level you choose. You will want to do some research to see what RAID level fits your needs the best. Personally, I am a fan of RAID 1, 6, and 10 because I feel that they offer appropriate levels of data protection along with a good measure of speed improvements.

6: Try a different browser

It's no secret: Different browsers perform differently, and most people spend a lot of time in their Web browser. Benchmarks really muddy the browser speed conversation. Some browsers perform well on some but do poorly on others, even when they are supposed to test the same thing. The problem with the benchmarks is that what they usually test is not real work performance! While JavaScript is an important part of the modern Web, few Web applications beat on the JavaScript engine hard enough to produce a noticeable impact on performance. That said, it's been my experience that the Chrome browser is the fastest for actual work. If you want to have your Web browser feel more responsive and lively, consider a switch to Chrome.

7: Remove junk

It's easy to have a computer get loaded up with junk that slows it down. The worst part is, we invite this garbage into our lives by installing "helpful" utilities, toolbars, and other add-ons. I could easily write a list of 10 kinds of computer-stalling junk. Here are some of the things you'll want to seek out and remove for best performance:

8: Add a faster DNS lookup server

Defragging your hard drives is a great way to get some more performance. While modern Windows systems automatically defrag on a regular basis, I've found that the Windows defragging is fairly unaggressive. We've reviewed a lot of different defrag apps here at TechRepublic. I suggest that you check out your alternatives and find one that does a better job for you.

10: Check network connectivity
  • Replacing the network cables, switches, routers, WiFi access points, etc.
  • Calling the ISP and checking the distance from the CO (for DSL) or the local segment's current load (for cable); the ISP may need to rewire or rework its connectivity. Satellite customers will want to double-check their dish installation and ensure that it is tightly locked down and pointed in the right direction.
  • Malware scanning on all PCs to see if malware is burdening the network
  • Inspecting the wiring of the phone lines (for DSL) or coax (cable customers) to look for loose connections, corrosion, or flaky wires
  • For cable customers, finding out how many splitters are between the line from the pole and their modem. If it is more than one (and preferably only a two-way splitter), they should rewire so that they have only a single two-way splitter between the pole and the modem to ensure the cleanest signal possible.

Performance-PCs - Bad Customer Service Reps

Performance-PCs - Bad Customer Service Reps

Update: This was worked out and I did get an apology. I will keep this up to keep record of my experience. But I am glad things worked out and moving forward I have better contacts for when I do decide to purchase from Performance PCs.

Below this point is History of the Experience:

Introduction:

I've heard bad things about the customer service reps at Performance-PCs but I didn't think the company as a whole was as bad as how my experience has been.

Let's start this off by saying I was looking forward to working with Performance-PCs because right now they're the biggest 2nd Tier Name to purchase water cooling parts from right now.

I was expecting more from them, honestly.

The problems started at my second order. Granted I had ordered before I really knew what I wanted for a reservoir, so I requested a return (RMA). This was ordered on Dec. 16th. It took 1 day less of a week for delivery.

I notified customer service that I would need to put in an RMA a day or two after my order. After I received the package I Then also put in the RMA (On the 22nd).

This is about the time I started to have problems because I put in a third order on the 22nd for new reservoir components (The Monsoon Modular Reservoir)

I put this order in on faith that I would get all the parts I needed to build this reservoir. Well my faith came from the system letting me order the parts as well as saying Good Stock.

Come to find out the very important parts of the reservoir were indeed not in stock, contrary to the what the website had said. They then had to be put on back order whilst their supplier (Monsoon) shipped the components I needed.

It has been a week since I have had any updates on the back order. Today 12/30/15 I had asked for an update and received one. They wouldn't be received at Performance-PCs until Monday (Another week away). That puts this build 3 weeks from me being able to do anything at all while all my components are sitting and collecting dust.

Now to the RMA, and the worst part of my experience with Performance-PCs. I sent this RMA as SOON as I received the package on the 22nd of December.

I patiently waited until it was received by Performance-PCs for a week. It was received on the 29th of December. As soon as I noticed it was received I sent a message to customer service to make sure everything was received. Without a verification of whether it was received or not, I was given the response that "The RMA person is out sick but we gave them this message."

This was fine. I had hoped that it would have been taken care of right away but I understand when someone is sick. I asked if anyone at all had the power to continue the processing of the RMA, like a manager or something. I also stated I couldn't wait another week to order the parts I was waiting for the credits to order because even I have limits.

The representative responded with "We have 3 people out sick (incl managers) and so we just do not have anyone to do this today. Best to make the new order now if you need it soon and use the credits for future. Sorry about this."

This is fine but Performance-PCs is running a business. Fail-safes should be in order to protect from something like this or even closing the company down to recoup. But to me that sounded like a pandemic, and an excuse.

So I ordered from somewhere else, and told them too. I also asked them to switch my RMA to the 20% restocking fee and to a refund because "I do not wish to do business here anymore."

I didn't expect to get such a misguided response.

"Thanks for your sympathy for all the sick employees. Maybe things like this never happen you you or where you work at. We are humans not machines.

Will change the RMA."

Sure things happen, this does not mean that:

A: You attack your customers or previous customers.

B: There shouldn't be a fail-safe for when things like this happen.

You should do everything possible to make the customer happy. (#1 rule in customer service.)

With our lab coats donned, our test benches primed, and our benchmarks at the ready, we look for answers to nine of the most burning performance-related questions

If there’s one thing that defines the Maximum PC ethos, it’s an obsession with Lab-testing. What better way to discern a product’s performance capabilities, or judge the value of an upgrade, or simply settle a heated office debate? This month, we focus our obsession on several of the major questions on the minds of enthusiasts. Is liquid cooling always more effective than air? Should serious gamers demand PCIe 3.0? When it comes to RAM, are higher clocks better? On the surface, the answers might seem obvious. But, as far as we’re concerned, nothing is for certain until it’s put to the test. We’re talking tests that isolate a subsystem and measure results using real-world workloads. Indeed, we not only want to know if a particular technology or piece of hardware is truly superior, but also by how much. After all, we’re spending our hard-earned skrilla on this gear, so we want our purchases to make real-world sense. Over the next several pages, we put some of the most pressing PC-related questions to the test. If you’re ready for the answers, read on.

Core i5-4670K vs. Core i5-3570K vs. FX-8350

People like to read about the $1,000 high-end parts, but the vast majority of enthusiasts don’t buy at that price range. In fact, they don’t even buy the $320 chips. No, the sweet spot for many budget enthusiasts is around $220. To find out which chip is the fastest midrange part, we ran Intel’s new Haswell Core i5-4670K against the current-champ Core i5-3570K as well as AMD’s Vishera FX-8350.

AMD’s FX-8350 has two cores up on the competition, but does that matter?

The Test: For our test, we socketed the Core i5-4670K into an Asus Z87 Deluxe with 16GB of DDR3/1600, an OCZ Vertex 3, a GeForce GTX 580 card, and Windows 8. For the Core i5-3570K, we used the same hardware in an Asus P8Z77-V Premium board, and the FX-8350 was tested in an Asus CrossHair V Formula board. We ran the same set of benchmarks that we used in our original review of the FX-8350 published in the Holiday 2012 issue.

The Results: First, the most important factor in the budget category is the price. As we wrote this, the street price of the Core i5-4670K was $240, the older Core i5-3570K was in the $220 range, and AMD’s FX-8350 went for $200. The 4670K is definitely on the outer edge of the budget sweet spot while the AMD is cheaper by a bit.

Intel’s Haswell Core i5-4670K slots right into the high end of the midrange.

One thing that’s not disputable is the performance edge the new Haswell i5 part has. It stepped away from its Ivy Bridge sibling in every test we ran by respectable double-digit margins. And while the FX-8350 actually pulled close enough to the Core i5-3570K in enough tests to go home with some multithreaded victories in its pocket, it was definitely kept humble by Haswell. The Core i5-4670K plain-and-simply trashed the FX-8350 in the vast majority of the tests that can’t push all eight cores of the FX-8350. Even worse, in the multithreaded tests where the FX-8350 squeezed past the Ivy Bridge Core i5-3570K, Haswell either handily beat or tied the chip with twice its cores.

The Core i5-3570K was great in its day, but it needs more than that to stay on top.

Even folks concerned with bang-for-the-buck will find the Core i5-4670K makes a compelling argument. Yes, it’s 20 percent more expensive than the FX-8350, but in some of our benchmarks, it was easily that much faster or more. In Stitch.Efx 2.0, for example, the Haswell was 80 percent faster than the Vishera. Ouch.

So where does this leave us? For first place, we’re proclaiming the Core i5-4570K the midrange king by a margin wider than Louie Anderson. Even the most ardent fanboys wearing green-tinted glasses or sporting an IVB4VR license plate can’t disagree.

For second place, however, we’re going to get all controversial and call it for the FX-8350, by a narrow margin. Here’s why: FX-8350 actually holds up against the Core i5-3570K in a lot of benchmarks, has an edge in mulitithreaded apps, and its AM3+ socket has a far longer roadmap than LGA1155, which is on the fast track to Palookaville.

Granted, Ivy Bridge and 1155 is still a great option, especially when bought on a discounted combo deal, but it’s a dead man walking, and our general guidance for those who like to upgrade is to stick to sockets that still have a pulse. Let’s not even mention that LGA1155 is the only one here with a pathetic two SATA 6Gb/s ports. Don’t agree? Great, because we have an LGA1156 motherboard and CPU to sell you.
