How to extract RAR archives on mac

How to extract RAR archives on mac.

Mac OS X already has an Archive Utility app built in, but it’s a capabilities are rather lacking. It only supports extracting from ZIP (.zip), GZIP (.gz), and a number of other less popular formats. There are a few apps like UnRarX and RAR Expander. but my personal favorite is The Unarchiver.

The Unarchiver is an open source app. It works seamlessly within OS X just like the built-in Archive Utility but supports a wide range or archive formats, including RAR archives. You don’t need to launch any app to extract archives; simply doubling clicking on your archive, and The Unachiver does the rest.

Download The Unarchiver. Requires Mac OS X v10.3.9 or higher.

Another neat fact about The Unarchiver is that if you start extracting from an archive while it’s already working on a different archive, it will wait for the first one to complete before started the second task.  This allows you to queue a set of extracting tasks quickly without slowing down your system.  It may not be an intended feature, but this behavior is really useful because when more than one archive is being extracted, they take longer to complete than having them completed one by one. It’s considerably slower when multi-tasking, this is especially evident with magnetic hard drives and other storage mediums with moving parts and slow seek times.

Once you download The Unarchiver and drag it to your Applications folder, launch the app and you will see the Preferences window. From here you can select/deselect the archive format you want it to be associated with. Also, under the Extraction tab, you may select a default directory for output, or you may leave it to ask every time.

The Unarchiver is a Mac OS X app, but the underlying unarchiving code can run on other OSes, too. There is not yet any GUI app for any other OS, but there are two command-line tools, unar and lsar. which can be used on Mac OS X, Windows and Linux.

Pre-compiled versions for Mac OS X are available on the [Google Code download page][downloadpage], or here:

For older Mac OS X versions, use the legacy version:

The Windows versions are currently cross-compiled with Cocotron on OS X. You find binary versions here:

(The Windows version is currently slightly outdated. An update will follow.)

Ubuntu 12.04 packages unar and lsar. under the package name "unar". You can install them from the Software Center, or using the command line:

Other Linuxes

You can also download the source code and compile the tools by hand. To do this, you will need to find and install the required third-party libraries that the XADMaster library depends on (GNUstep, zlib, libbzip2, OpenSSL, and ICU). How to do that depends on which distribution you are using. On Ubuntu, the following should work:

Beginner: How to Extract

Beginner: How to Extract .RAR Files on Windows and Mac OS X

This article is valid for Windows XP, Windows 7, Windows 8, and even Windows Vista.

Editor’s Note: as the title suggests, this article is not meant for technically savvy readers. Please don’t be rude in the comments.

There are a variety of applications on Windows to open .RAR files, and while the default choice is WinRAR by the developers of the .RAR file format, it’s not free. If you need to create files, that’s your best bet, but if you just need to extract them, you’ll want to use the free and open source 7-Zip application instead.

Once you’ve downloaded and installed 7-Zip from their web site,  you can right-click on any .RAR file and easily choose to extract the files from the menu. Note that if you’ve got a multi-part set of .RAR files, you’ll want to click on the first file.

You can also view the contents of the archived file by either choosing open archive from the context menu or by double clicking on the file.

There’s a lot of other applications that support extraction of .RAR files, but because 7-Zip is open source and free, it’s our default choice.

In Mac OSX there are not as many choices as on the more popular Windows platform, however there are still a few choices, like the free app “The Unarchiver “, which has great support for multi-part archive files. Once installed, you can launch the app to associate file types with the app:

The way to extract your archives on a Mac is to simply double-click on the file. The Unarchiver will create a folder with the same name as the archive and extract its contents into the folder.

If you use prefer to deal with your archives with a different tool please let us know about it in the comments.

    RAR file extension

The rar file extension is used for compressed archives created with RAR or WinRAR, RAR for Mac or other compression utilities. RAR/WinRAR one of the most used and famous compression programs in history. The .rar archives can be generally extracted in almost any archiving tool.

The rar file extension is is commonly related to RAR and WinRAR file archiver as well as its default archive file format. RAR was a MS-DOS archiver. WinRar is its successor and popular file archiver for Windows.

Similar to other compressed file archive formats, rar files are data containers, that store one or several files and folders in compressed form. Compressed data can be in one single file or multiple splitted files (eg. archive.rar, archvie.r01,archive.r02 etc.). In WinRAR you can split a huge archive to a few smaller files, which are called volumes.

If you need to unpack rar multi-volumes, place all them to the same folder and start extraction from the first volume.

RAR archives can be also password protected.
