Firefox is my favorite browser ever. I love it because I can open as many tabs as I want in a single window and I can freely customize it with extensions. The problem is that these two great features, tabs and extensions, sometimes turn Firefox into a heavy burden on system resources.
But now I've found the perfect solution. It's called Firefox Ultimate Optimizer and it's a small tool that drastically reduces the browser's craving for memory and CPU. The program doesn't have any configuration options and can only be set to launch with Windows if you have admin rights on your system.
Once launched, it will simply sit on the system tray and perform its task in an incredibly efficient way. Just open the Task manager window and see the difference between running Firefox with or without Firefox Ultimate Optimizer .
I have one single complaint: I'd like to be able to hide the system tray icon. But I guess that's a small detail that can be added that to the Wish List for future versions. In all, this is an excellent Firefox companion that makes me love my favorite browser even more.

Would you use a program that would reduce the memory usage of Firefox to 100-200 Kilobyte. I have no idea how the Firefox Ultimate Optimizer is reducing the memory usage to this amount but the task manager is verifying the reduction. Firefox has been using roughly 40 Megabytes of RAM whenever I started it and one homepage was loaded.
After starting Firefox Ultimate Optimizer the RAM usage was reduced to 188 Kilobyte even with Firefox as the active window. The software does not have to be configured and sits in the system tray all the time.
I did scan it with Virus Total which did not find a single virus but I'm still puzzled on how this is achieved. I tried searching for more information but the developers homepage is down currently. It must be some kind of trick but I can't find out how it's done. If you know let me know please.
Update. The file is no longer available, and I suggest you take a look at another comparable program instead if you want to optimize the browser's memory usage. More recent versions of the web browser have been optimized by Mozilla in this regard, and you should see a drop in average memory usage when you compare one of the latest versions to Firefox 3 or 4.
One program that you can check out for the purpose is Firefox Plumber which can reduce the memory usage of the browser significantly, at least for a while. Alternatives include automatically restarting Firefox on high memory usage. using Memory Fox which works more or less like Firefox Plumber, or applying a tweak to the browser to trim the memory when the window gets minimized.
You can combine some of the options if you want, even though I'd suggest you start with the config tweaks first to see if it resolves the memory issues. If not, check out the programs that can reduce the browsers memory usage significantly.

Друзья, я бы опубликовал этот пост еще вчера ночью, но я хотел убедиться, что все будет работать нормально. Путешествуя вчера по сети, в своем любимом браузере Firefox, я чисто случайно наткнулся на программу которая по заверению автора уменьшает размер Firefox в оперативной памяти. Я не поверил и скачал ее. Вот результаты:
Как программа это делает? У тебя может быть открыто 20 вкладок, но в один момент времени ты работаешь только с одной вкладкой. Программа сбрасывает информацию о неиспользуемых вкладках из оперативной памяти в SWAP вот и весь секрет! На скорость открытия вкладок это никак не влияет.
Cоздание комфорта зависит от множества удобных мелочей.
Итак, проблема: браузер Firefox достаточно прожорлив к оперативной памяти и проработав пару суток выжирает иногда больше гига памяти. Это вообщем – то небольшая проблема, и Firefox можно перезапускать, но, тем не менее, иногда напрягает, когда браузер начинал тупить, сжирая дофига памяти, при этом еще больше обычного подгружал процессор.
Благодаря pingo и его посту на умаксфоруме узнал про программку, которая укрощает прожорливость Firefox’a к памяти. Программка написана на .NET, называется “Firefox Ultimate Optimizer ” работает в бэкграунде и судя по описанию постоянно дает пинка Лисе, которая уже в свою очередь складывает нажратую память в swap. Вообщем – то рекомендуется вообще выключить файл подкачки(swap).
Стремлением оптимизировать использование связки, написал маленький .bat – файл, который запускает одним кликом Firefox и его Optimizer. Скрипт проверяет список процессов на наличие Optimizer’a и запускает либо FF+Optimizer, либо только FF, если Optimizer уже запущен. Удобно это тем, что не надо два раза тыкать мышкой, сначала по Оптимайзеру, затем по Фаерфоксу, удобно просто ярлык .bat – файла выгнать на панель быстрого запуска, поменять иконку файла на фаерфоксовскую и забыть про эту неприятность. Конечно, можно добавить в автозагрузку эту тулзу, но мне это не подходит по некоторым причинам.
В коде необходимо поменять пути до Firefox и Optimizer на свои:

Автор программы обещает что Firefox будет жрать меньше памяти.У меня он обычно использует 150-200 Мб при 30 открытых вкладках. Перед запуском программу проверил на вирусы, Нод32 вирусов не нашел.
После запуска этой программы появилась иконка в трее и Firefox стал использовать действительно меньше памяти ( сам процесс Firefox 15-35Мб и сам процесс оптимизатора около 12Мб).
Утилита функционирует следующим образом:
исходя из того, что пользователь одновременно не использует все открытые вкладки, программа сбрасывает информацию о неиспользуемых вкладках из оперативной памяти в swap. Программка работает и работает честно - в комментах на блоге у разработчика гневных откликов не видно. Помимо всего прочего влияние утилиты заметно и на Thunderbird.
Так что всем любителям Firefox советую.
