Hangouts is a Chrome extension that offers you an accessible and fun way of chatting with friends and family.

You can add it to your browser directly from the Chrome web store or manually install it by dropping the extension file into its corresponding section. Once added, it creates the typical icon in the Chrome interface which you can use to access it.

Clicking the Hangouts icon from the browser opens up the chat service in a window that is completely independent from Chrome. This way, when you’re done browsing but you still want to chat, closing the browser doesn’t affect Hangouts.

Its interface is simple and allows for quick access to all the available features. The main window contains a list of all your contacts and you can open them with a simple click. You can have conversations with one or more people at a time and even create video conferences with up to 10 people. During chat you can always create new groups, archive the conversation and activate the history. You can even block users.

Within the Hangouts chat you can easily share and collect images and use a very large number of emoji to express your state of mind.

Hangouts also makes it easy to handle multiple chat windows. Each new one you create snaps to the previous one and so you get a neatly organized sequence of tabs. Minimizing them they remain hidden under the taskbar and reveal themselves when you move the mouse cursor over them. It’s a really nice feature to have, especially of you have a large number of windows that are opened at the same time.

In closing, Hangouts is a very practical extension that can easily help you stay in touch with friends while also providing you with sharing and video conferencing features that cone in handy all the time.

Google Hangouts replaces a number of other Google chat options.

Google is a company that is firmly associated with communication. With Gmail it has email covered but when it comes to instant messaging and chatting, the picture has been rather fragmented. The aim of Hangouts is to create a unified experience for iOS, Chrome and Android users. Hangouts is available as an app for Android and iOS, as well as an extension for Chrome, and it basically serves as a replacement for Google Talk and Google+ Messenger.

The app looks pretty simple, but that is part of the appeal. The redesigned service makes it easier than ever to keep in touch with people who may be using different platforms, and as it is available in three different forms, it should perhaps come as no surprise that Hangout chat are synchronized between devices so you can move seamlessly from Chrome to iOS to Android without missing a beat.

Unlike some many other messaging tools, Hangouts does not feature different user statuses – such as away, busy or available. With support for video chats including up to ten people, synchronized notifications as well as messages and easy sharing of files, Hangouts brings together the best features of the services it is replacing. If you are already a Google Talk user, the jump to Hangouts should be very easy, and while this is a very basic messaging system when compared to the likes of Skype or Whatsapp, there is a quiet elegance that demands attention.

The Chrome extension is accessible not only from within Chrome, but also as a tray icon so you can see what's happening when you are using other programs.

При этом Hangouts работает одинаково хорошо в режиме Windows 8 и без него. В любом случае, приложение будет "плавать" на рабочем столе в виде небольшой иконки.

Hangouts позволяет вести несколько бесед поверх рабочего стола или браузера. Все беседы скрыты под аватарами собеседников над иконкой. Список контактов и все ваши чаты сконцентрированы в одном простом окошке. Кроме того, приложение умеет уведомлять о новых сообщениях, а к самому разговору можно вернуться, кликнув по аватару собеседника.

Приложение работает за пределами вашего браузера, чаты всегда находятся перед вами, не прячась внутри окна. Вся переписка, конечно, будет синхронизироваться через Hangouts на всех устройствах. В Windows 8 чаты будут работать и после закрытия браузера Chrome.

Hangouts обзавёлся и всеми функциями видео и голосовых вызовов. Недавно компания объявила, что сервис способен совершать телефонные звонки на любой номер в любую точку мира (через Hangouts dialer), и теперь эта функциональность доступна прямо с рабочего стола. Если вы используете Google Voice, то приложение предложит и полную поддержку Google Voice, так что вы можете совершать и принимать звонки, а также получать голосовые и SMS сообщения непосредственно в Hangouts.

Можно сказать, что Google реализовал один из самых простых мессенджеров для Windows 8. Как вы можете заметить из скриншотов, Hangouts не отнимает много места и не перегружен лишними настройками.

Google Hangouts plugin just wont install.

Anyways, me, my house hold, my family, friends all of us, were big Android/Google fans, personally I love using this new Hangout app, much improved

So I decided to install it on my PC as well after avoiding years of video chat, the family are all moving and growing up and they're all connecting via Google hangout, much better experience they have had with that over Skype, which is probably somewhat biased and down to personal preference, but I'd be using hangouts to contact most people, video chat etc via my Nexus 4, but when I'm at home I obviously want the HD quality on my computer over my Nexus.

The problem: - See attachment

Error 1619, god nothing I have done has changed the error let alone let me install it.

I've tried turning my firewall off.

Turning Anti-Virus(security centre) off.

Booting into safe mode.

Other user accounts(My account is the full admin account)

Compatibility mode (lol).

Taking ownership of all related temp files, entire C: drive for the sake of it (took a while)

I then gave up < Can't even deal with other attempts

I forwarded the problem and checked those Google help forums, but no useful information came out of it at all.

Replacing Google Talk is Google Hangouts. This communications program is a plugin that you can download and install for Google Chrome. With this, you can talk and communicate via video right in your desktop. One advantage of this application is that you can talk to as many as 10 people right all at the same time. Aside from video calls, you can also engage your friends and family with voice calls. You can even send Emoji, photos, message alerts and more.

Hangouts App for Chrome Gets a Brand New Look

Google has updated the desktop Hangouts Chrome app with a brand new look. 

The new designed bears more than a passing resemblance to the official Hangouts app on Android tablets and iPads, using a single-windowed mode and split-column layout to keep chats and contacts together.

Split into two columns, the left panel plays hosts to the contacts list, message history and calls (plus a floating action button for creating a new chat). The right side displays the active conversation plus settings and options when selected.

New Look Hangouts App

Google introduced  the Hangouts Chrome App last October with a Facebook Messenger style transparent ‘floating chat heads’ design, pictured below.

While well received at the time, the ‘floating heads’ were only officially supported on Chrome OS and Windows only. Mac and Linux users could use the app but would see a solid background rather than transparent so crucial to the heads-up experience.

The new design solves these niggles. For Mac users it is enabled by default.

If you have the Hangouts app installed on Windows, Linux or Chrome OS and see floating heads do not panic. Nothing is broken; only Mac OS X uses the new single window layout by default.

On Windows, Linux and Chrome OS systems Hangouts will continue to default to the ‘floating’ version, but the new design is easily enabled

To turn on the Hangouts app new single window mode:

1. Launch the Hangouts app
2. Click the green floating action button
3. Click the settings icon (three horizontal lines)
4. Scroll down and click the ‘Disable transparent UI’ button

The change will take effect immediately. To switch back to the chat bubbles mode simply repeat the steps listed above and click the ‘Enable transparent UI’ button.

If you already have the Hangouts Chrome App you should already have the update (open it and check, if not just be patient).

If you don’t already have the Hangouts Chrome Appa — note: app, not extension — you can grab it from the Chrome Web Store for free. It works on Chrome OS, Windows, Mac OS X and Linux.
